There are places that feel like postcards, and then there’s Positano. This vertical city, where cascading pastel colored houses seem to cling to dramatic cliffs of the Lattari mountains towards the turquoise Tyrrhenian sea. Winding staircases lead to secret corners and pathways, and the scent of citrus floats through the beautiful sea breeze. It’s effortlessly romantic, quietly indulgent, and perfectly aligned with what so many DINKS crave: connection, experience, and a sense of freedom that doesn’t need to be rushed.
The first thing you need to know about Positano is that it is a workout. Known as the "city of stairs," you will likely climb hundreds of steps every single day, but the rewards for those burning glutes are unmatched. Every corner turned reveals a new, breathtaking panoramic view of the iconic tiled dome of Santa Maria Assunta and the sparkling coastline below.
Positano isn’t just a destination, it’s a mood. If you’re looking to slow down, reconnect, and savor something truly unforgettable together, Positano delivers. It’s built for lingering. Think long lunches, late sunsets, spontaneous detours. It rewards DINKS who can be present.
For DINKS, that means no rigid schedules, just follow your curiosity, more flexibility for boutique stays and experiences, space to reconnect without distractions and a chance to prioritize quality time over quantity of activities. It’s luxury without feeling flashy. Romance without trying too hard.
If you’re the kind of couple that bonds over movement and shared experiences, Positano has you covered!
Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) - A breathtaking hike with panoramic views that feel almost surreal where you can view the Amalfi Coast and the nearby village of Praiano. You can find various hiking tours that include an authentic Italian lunch and more here - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g194863-Activities-Positano_Amalfi_Coast_Province_of_Salerno_Campania.html.
Music On The Rocks - A unique nightclub built directly into a cave right by the water, perfect for late-night drinks and dancing. You can search events here - https://musicontherocks.it/.
Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta - Located in the heart of the village, this church is famous for its stunning majolica-tiled dome that gleams in the sun. Please visit https://chiesapositano.it/en/ to learn more about the church and the MAR below.
Museo Archeologico Romano (aka as MAR) - Is located underneath the church, this recently renovated museum features ancient Roman frescoes and multimedia displays and costs around 15 euros to get in.
Part of Positano’s charm is in the details, the small, handcrafted touches you won’t find anywhere else.
Artisanal Finds - Positano is famous for its "Moda Positano" style. You can find custom, made-to-order sandals custom-fitted while you wait at shops like Safari or purchase high-quality linen clothing at Pepitos that's perfect for coastal evenings.
The Lemon Obsession - Everything is lemon-themed here, from the ceramics to the legendary lemon sorbetto served inside a giant frozen lemon.
Charter a Private Boat - Swim in hidden coves, sip prosecco onboard, and see Positano from the water, it’s a completely different kind of magic. You can also take excursions to other areas of the Amalfi coast from Positano. Some tours offer swimming and a light lunch. Sunset cruises are also available. Check out https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g194863-Activities-Positano_Amalfi_Coast_Province_of_Salerno_Campania.html for various tours.
You can also book a public boat ride as well from the pier at Spiaggia Grande. We took a public boat ride from Positano to Salerno, which isn't that far and it was so nice and relaxing. From Salerno you can take a SITA (local) bus to other areas on the Amalfi, like Vietri Sul Mare where they are known for their ceramics. *DINKS Lifestyle tip, each town along the Amalfi coast has it's own style of ceramics.
Spiaggia Grande – A Lively, iconic, energetic, main beach right in the heart of town. It can get a bit crowded and is a bit rocky, but still beautiful. I'd suggest wearing water shoes that you can find here https://amzn.to/49P467P.
Fornillo Beach – This beach is a short walk down a coastal path and far more peaceful. Perfect for couples who want a quieter vibe that feels like a local secret.
You can rent sun loungers, order drinks, and stay for hours. No guilt. No schedule.
Wander the town itself—its staircases, hidden alleys, and tiny shops are an adventure on their own.
Positano isn't a place for checking off a long list of "sights." Instead, the real magic lies in lingering.
Hotel Recommendations
Now where you stay in Positano isn’t just a place to sleep, it’s part of the experience.
Hotel Buca di Bacco - We stayed at this hotel the last time we were there. We'd highly recommend it. We had a lovely room facing the sea with a small terrace where we could sit and have a glass of wine or a coffee in the morning. It was absolutely stunning! They also have a restaurant downstairs that overlooks the sea.
Le Sirenuse - Is classic, iconic, and dripping with charm. Think hand-painted tiles, candlelit terraces, and views that feel unreal. Explore the Amalfi Coast on the hotel's magnificent boat, the Sant'Antonio. Complimentary daily excursions are offered from June to October. They also offer a spa and swimming pool.
Il San Pietro di Positano – A secluded retreat carved into the cliff, complete with a private beach and elevator through rock. Yes, really. Drift along Positano’s dramatic coastline on a complimentary boat cruise, where sun-drenched bluffs and sapphire waters paint an unforgettable panorama. For those seeking an ultra-private escape, charter one of their luxury yachts and let the Amalfi breeze carry you to secret coves and storied islands. They have an exclusive beach club, panoramic swimming pool overlooking the horizon and a seaside tennis court.
Casa Angelina (nearby in Praiano) – Minimalist and serene, just outside Positano for couples who want quiet luxury with fewer crowds. This boutique hotel offers 36 rooms, top level gastronomy, a pool and a rooftop restaurant overlooking the beautiful blue sea.
Speaking of restaurants there are a lot in Positano to choose from and most offer beautiful views of the sea. We'd highly recommend Adamo ed Eva Ristorante, La Sponda and Ristorante Max (though not a sea view, the service and food is amazing) and Il Tridente Positano.
Try the local spaghetti al limone, fresh seafood, and don’t skip the limoncello, it’s basically part of the culture. Just make sure you sip it because it's a bit strong.
As the sun dips below the horizon, Positano shifts into something softer, slower, and even more romantic. Sip wine on your terrace as the lights flicker across the cliffs. Take a quiet walk through town after dinner, just be prepared for lots of stairs! Find a tucked-away bar with live music and stay longer than planned. There’s no rush here. That’s the point. Positano isn’t about checking boxes, it’s about feeling something together.
It’s the kind of place where time stretches, conversations deepen and the little moments like coffee on a balcony, a shared laugh over dinner, a sunset you didn’t plan, become the highlight. For DINKS, that’s the real luxury.
Various Fairs & Festivals
Festa di San Vito (June 15) - Is Positano's patron saint celebration featuring a procession, marching bands, and amazing fireworks on the beach.
Positano Premia la Danza (July) - An international dance award held at the MAR Positano Villa Romana.
Festa della Madonna del Carmine (July 15–16) - An atmospheric candlelit boat procession.
Ferragosto & Festa di Santa Maria Assunta (August 15) - This is a major celebration with spectacular fireworks over the sea, music, and festivities.
Christmas Festivities (December) - Featuring the zeppola Christmas Festival on the main beach and nativity scenes.
There are many options for getting into Positano from the Naples International Airport. Below are some options to choose from -
Most flights arrive into the Naples International Airport (NAP) in the morning. We suggest booking a private transfer prior to your arrival if you'd like to go that route. You can book a private transfer at https://positanolimoservice.com/. Please note, some hotels are not reachable by car and you might have to take your suitcases up and down stairs so, be prepared and try not to overpack and wear comfortable shoes upon arrival.
If you're adventurous DINKS you can get to Positano also by taking the Curreri Viaggi shuttle bus from right outside the Naples International Airport to Sorrento. The ride takes about 75 minutes and costs roughly 10 euros and then from the Sorrento train/bus station, transfer to a SITA Sud (south) bus to Positano. It's about a 50 minute ride and cost around 4 euros.
Alternatively, you can take a scenic direct ferry ride from the Sorrento port if you'd prefer. Ferries typically cost around 35+ euros each way. I'd suggest booking the ferry in advance at https://www.ferryhopper.com/en/ferry-routes/direct/sorrento-positano. Now onto Day 1!
Five Day Itinerary
Day 1:
Once you arrive in Positano, check into your hotel (hopefully, you didn't have to climb too many stairs to get there), unpack your packing cubes, take a nice shower and a quick rest before heading out to lunch.
We'd suggest exploring the area of your hotel. That way you can get acclimated to what is in the area so, when you're out walking and exploring the small cobblestone staired pathways you'll know what direction to head.
Today is a good day to take it slow. After a long flight, have an early dinner around 8:30pm or so (I know it's not early, but it's early in Positano) and go back to your hotel and have a nice glass of wine or after dinner liquor on your terrace, if you've booked a room with a terrace. If not, no worries, most hotels have a restaurant and/or bar where you can have an after dinner drink before heading back to your room.
Day 2:
Wake up to breakfast on your terrace or at a sea view restaurant of your choice. Today is a good day to explore the church and museum. Spend a few hours learning about the history and architecture of Positano. Take a break for a fresh caprese salad or some fresh pasta with seafood. Then had back to your hotel and freshen up and grab your beachwear and head off to the beautiful beach. Rent a lounger and relax! After hours relaxing in the beautiful sunshine, head back to your hotel and get ready for a romantic evening under the stars. Book a table at https://www.adamoedevarestaurant.it/ for a delicious dinner and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Day 3:
Explore the artesinal shops and cobblestone alleyways. Shop for souvenirs like soft linen clothing, handmade shoes, etc... Today is a day for exploring Positano and it's many small shops.
Day 4:
Take one of the many optional extras that we suggest below. Like a boat tour to the Island of Capri or Sorrento, an Italian cooking class or hike the Path of the Gods. Today is about adventure!
Day 5:
Finish up last minute souvenir shopping. Pack up those packing cubes and get ready to head back home!
Optional Extras
Take a day trip to the island of Capri where you'll find the famous Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni Rocks and don't miss the views from Giardini di Augusto (the Gardens of Augustus). You can also take a day trip to Pompeii with a drive along the Amalfi coast that has some unforgettable views and great photo ops. You can find various tour offerings at https://www.tripadvisor.com/Search?q=day+tours+from+positano&geo=1&ssrc=a&searchNearby=false&searchSessionId=000d0d7b62eccd47.ssid&offset=0.
You can book various types of lemon grove tours here - https://www.amalfilemonexperience.it/
Take an Italian cooking class at Amalfi Heaven Gardens https://www.amalfigardens.com/ and enjoy a great farm to table experience.
DINKS Lifestyle Tips
Start early or go at golden hour to avoid crowds and heat. Bring your DINKS Lifestyle water bottle with you (found in our DINKS store) to stay hydrated and your camera for some amazing photos.
Book a room with a private terrace, even if it’s a splurge. Morning espresso overlooking the sea and late-night wine under the stars and possibly a full moon. That’s the kind of memory you keep. We will always remember sipping a glass of wine on our private terrace during a full moon. It was absolutely amazing!
The best time to visit Positano is the month of May or September/October for better prices and more breathing room. June through August is peak season and "absolutely crazy" with crowds. Been there done that, it was super humid, hot and crowded!
Leave the heels at home! The cobblestones and stairs demand comfortable walking shoes. When we travel we wear our Ecco sandals. You can find them on Amazon.com at https://amzn.to/4dpiPbX. They are super comfortable and supportive. Just don't get them wet! Wear your beach/water shoes for the beach since it can be a bit rocky.
When you're sovenir shopping buy something meaningful, not just memorable. A piece you’ll use at home brings the experience back with you. We purchased beautiful handmade candles and some delicious homemade limoncello when we were there. The containers for the candles were very decorative and we were able to reuse them with other candles and the bottles that held the limoncello (yes, we already drank it lol), are so amazing that you can keep them as souvenirs.
Skip the rush. Book late dinners between 8:30 and 9:30pm, dress up a little, and let the night stretch out. There are so many paths/walkways you can take after dinner for an evening stroll.
You don’t go to Positano to do more. You go to Positano to be more present and sometimes, that’s exactly the kind of escape DINKS need.
Positano is a place that imprints on your soul. Whether you’re diving off a wooden boat en route to Capri or sipping a sunset spritz on a cliffside balcony, it’s a dream that stays with you long after you've gone home.
